When Does a Tooth Really Need a Dental Crown for Protection?
Dental crowns can restore damaged teeth and help protect them from further oral health problems.

When Does a Tooth Need a Crown?
A dental crown is a custom-made restoration that covers and protects a damaged or weakened tooth. Crowns can restore the shape, strength, and function of a tooth while also improving its appearance.
Why Might You Need a Crown?
A dentist may recommend a crown when a tooth has significant decay, a large filling, a crack, or substantial structural damage. Crowns can also be used after root canal treatment to help protect a tooth that has become more vulnerable to fracture.
In some cases, a crown may also be recommended to restore a worn or severely discolored tooth.
What Happens During the Process?
Your dentist will first examine the tooth and determine whether a crown is the appropriate treatment. The tooth is then prepared so the crown can fit securely over it.
Depending on the treatment approach and the type of restoration being used, your dentist may provide a temporary crown while the permanent one is being made. Once the final crown is ready, it is carefully fitted and bonded into place.
Caring for Your Crown
A crowned tooth still needs regular care. Brush twice a day, clean between your teeth, and attend routine dental checkups. Avoid using your teeth to bite hard objects, as excessive force can damage both natural teeth and dental restorations.
With proper care and regular dental visits, a crown can provide long-term support for a damaged tooth.
